Job Summary Avantor’s Legal Department is seeking a Senior Counsel, Labor & Employment to support client groups within Avantor’s enterprise, reporting directly to Vice President, Legal. MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides advice and counseling to HR Business Partners and the business on all facets of employment and labor law, including employee relations issues, wage and hour laws, leaves of absence, termination, discipline, reasonable accommodations, retaliation, reductions-in-force, unemployment, employment discrimination, unfair labor practices, and employee benefits. Investigate, develop strategy, and respond to charges of discrimination, unfair labor practices, and other complaints filed with federal, state, and local administrative agencies, including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board, U.S. Department of Labor, and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Support entire company in establishing best policies and practices for the company’s compliance with various federal, state, and local labor and employment laws and to develop and administer employee training. Works closely with Human Resources to develop and keep up to date the relevant policy and procedures and promote awareness and understanding of any policy changes. Tracks labor and employment activity on a global basis to identify trends and provide strategic advice, counseling, and training. Represent the company at administrative hearings, fact-finding conferences, mediations, and other proceedings. QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications) J.D. degree and membership in at least one state bar 10+ years of experience with state and federal employment law and advising and counseling clients on such laws Employment litigation experience and experience coordinating and driving to completion large-scale projects (including litigations) US citizenship or possession of a valid green card (for compliance with federal regulatory requirements applicable to our business) Undergraduate or graduate degree in biochemistry or chemical engineering preferred KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently) High integrity, with a commitment to upholding Avantor’s values of innovation, customer centricity, accountability, respect, and excellence Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to impact and influence at all levels of an organization Exceptional analytical, drafting, legal research, writing, and organizational skills, plus focused attention to detail Strong and effective judgment, and ability to present ideas logically Client-focused and confident, with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to interact with senior business leaders, as well as vendors, customers and other third parties Ability to resolve conflict, overcome resistance and facilitate consensus Flexibility to adapt to new Company priorities, processes, initiatives, and risk tolerance, and the ability to offer practical, compliance-oriented solutions Collaborative approach necessary for working in a global organization Ability to work independently and handle complex and sophisticated legal matters with minimal supervision Ability to handle multiple priorities within tight deadlines and prioritize workload in a manner that best serves the needs of the business Willing to learn new areas of business and the law ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT (Under Typical Positions) Remote US-based work position Potential for occasional in-person office meetings; office environment has adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than ten (10) lbs.
