In Europe, over 30% of food is wasted amounting to a staggering 88million tonnes every year.
Food waste is not only a waste of resources, it has serious consequences for the future of ou planet as every year the food we don’t eat is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time in Europe 22% of people are at risk of food poverty. The European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) supports a network of 30 national organisations across Europe. We tackle the issues of food insecurity and food waste in Europe and are committed to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and 12.3 (halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels).
FEBA is a membership organisation with members in 30 European countries established more than 35 years ago. It represents its members at European and international level; supports and strengthens Food Banks in Europe by providing training, sharing best practices, and developing partnerships; fosters the creation of new Food Banks in countries where it is needed.
FEBA brings together 335 Food Banks which are committed to prevent food waste and provide food to charities helping the most deprived. In 2020 our members provided 860,000 tonnes of food to 48,126 charitable organisations helping 12.8 million people thanks to the hard work of 37,016 volunteers and staff.

How we help people and the planet?
In 4 short years since we’ve established our team in Brussels, we have dramatically increased our supporters and partners.
– We work with Food Banks and other EU-level NGOs to support those in need. We partner with food business operators across the food supply chain to engage them with our membership to recover their surplus food and reduce their food waste.
– We are a non-profit organisation and are funded through grants, fundraising and contributions from our members, foundations, philanthropists, companies, and individuals.
– We work closely with European Commission on cross-cutting policy topics and delivery of EU-wide impact focused projects including data collection and digital transformation.
– We have a busy calendar of events through the year where our members participate in updates, information, and skill-sharing and advocacy. We have also dramatically increased the number of supporters and corporates who work with us and our membership, in particular in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
