The HIV Prevention Medical Assistant will support clinical services provided to patients by ensuring quality patient care through HIV Prevention Service programs. Under the clinical guidance/oversight of the HIV Advanced Practice Provider, the HIV Medical Assistant will be responsible for performing clinical tasks in accordance with all Harris County Public Health policies and procedures as delegated by the HIV Advanced Practice Provider.
This position supports the Harris County Public Health Department, and reports to the HIV Prevention Program Program Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assists with patient appointments by performing phlebotomy (including capillary and venous draws), urine collection, pregnancy tests, lead testing, vital signs, & gathering patient histories.
Prepares and labels all patient specimens for transport to appropriate laboratories.
Provides in-room support for all clinical staff during the clinic visits as needed, including assisting the provider during procedures.
Maintains laboratory and exam rooms in a neat, clean, and orderly manner in accordance with infection control policies, and complete monthly inventory.
Assists in performing data entry and electronic data processing by using the HCPH electronic medical record system (Epic), Microsoft Excel, and any other related programs/sites.
Stocks the exam rooms with medical supplies necessary for client screening.
Maintains inventory and rotates dated stock to prevent loss, orders appropriately.
Performs quality assurance on all needed medical equipment and supplies.
Remove barriers and create innovative solutions to connect patients with our services.
Prepares and sets up patient waiting/reception area before clinic sessions.
Returns all equipment to the proper storage area after clinic session ends.
Support clinic front office as needed in answering phone, patient collections, and checking patients as needed.

Requirements
Education & Experience
High School Diploma/GED
Four (4) years as a Medical Assistant in a medical office, hospital, or laboratory, with the expectation to display competent laboratory procedures.
Additional Requirements
Completion of a Medical Assistant program
CPR certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
Ability to work well with teammates.
Communicates clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Work Environment:
This position operates in a medical clinic environment and mobile clinic setting.
This position also operates in a standard office environment with standard equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
Physical Demands:
Persons in these positions frequently lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 lbs. They also occasionally move objects weighing up to 20 lbs., and sometimes, but rarely, up to 50 lbs.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
Regular full time position. Days and hours of the position are typically Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm. 40 hours week.
Non-traditional work hours for special weekend testing events, and evening mobile events.
