Sets up and operates CNC lathes and CNC mills, as well as manual equipment with little or no supervision, by performing the following duties. May need assistance in set-up and reading blueprints.
Essential Responsibilities
Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements, may need assistance.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
Position Requirements
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma, 2-3 years machining experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of CNC lathes, tool grinders, grinding wheels, manual lathes and CNC mills. Knowledge of measuring equipment, wrenches, general complement of tools and their use. Knowledge of machinibility of various materials.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock, Lubricating fluids and sharp tools and edges. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
