This position provides food safety expertise and oversight for Meijer and Fresh Thyme retail stores and distribution facilities and Meijer manufacturing facilities. Acts as the region’s subject matter expert for Meijer and Fresh Thyme Supply Chain regarding compliance to food safety regulations and Meijer Standard Operating Procedures. Ensures uncompromising food safety performance through science-based HACCP audits of our facilities, education of team members & leadership on the science behind food safety. Has multi-region responsibility, acting as a positive change agent by enhancing the Meijer and Fresh Thyme food safety culture within our retail stores and our manufacturing and distribution facilities. This position also provides supervisory leadership for select Regional Food Safety Specialists as assigned. The role will oversee and be based out of our Northern Region. . Key Deliverables: Oversees training and leadership development of assigned Regional Food Safety Specialists. Takes a lead role in communications with Store Operations and assigned regional leadership teams (i.e. Regional VP, Market Directors, Directors of Operations, etc.). Collaborates on a daily basis with other members of the corporate Food Safety and Quality Assurance (QA) Department to discuss and analyze food safety trends and findings with other regions and maintains a standardized approach to food safety audits in order to ensure Meijer food safety programs are executed to the highest standards. Provides expert HACCP guidance and instructional knowledge as it relates to food safety and food defense issues within our retail, manufacturing and distribution operations. Conducts a minimum of 3 annual science-based HACCP Food Safety Audits within our retail stores or as assigned. Conducts and oversees food safety inspections within both Meijer manufacturing and distribution facilities to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Good Warehouse Practices (GWPs) as well as the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) annually as assigned. Assists our Manufacturing Food Safety & QA staff on an ongoing basis to ensure all regulatory and internal food safety standards regarding the FSMA and SQF are met. Ensures that our facilities are properly executing Meijer and regulatory food safety product recall protocols and response procedures. Takes the lead and provides food safety guidance for multiple Meijer and Fresh Thyme regions, within our supply-chain regarding product, facilities, & illness complaints in accordance with our Emergency Procedures Manual. Required to perform food safety on-call duties and responsibilities during and outside of normal business hours, as needed. Assists in the development, implementation and execution of food safety training programs and examinations. Conducts bacterial control testing and environmental swabbing of equipment using aseptic procedures. Knows State and local food safety code differences within assigned areas and acts as the primary Meijer food safety contact at the State & local level by assisting in the inspection and opening of new stores, as well as, for capital projects and remodels. Analyze, prepare, and present Trend Analysis Reporting to supply-chain leadership on multiple regional food safety metrics and training performance against company goals and chain-wide facility performance metrics. Provide leadership guidance in the development and execution of science-based action plans for improving food safety program execution and regional performance to company goals and objectives. Indentifies critical food safety and merchandising quality breakdowns in operations and/or merchandising procedures and acts as a proactive change agent by proposing possible solutions to food safety leadership for further discussion. Supervises the work and training activities of assigned Regional Food Safety Specialists, to include but no limited to, food safety audits (retail assessments, GWP audits, GMP audits, Produce Quality Support Surveys), manager level food safety training review and exam administration, new and existing store food safety training, pest control program oversight, product quality concern investigations, food safety on-call activities and reports, weekly activity reports, etc. This job profile is not meant to be all inclusive of the responsibilities of this position; may perform other duties as assigned or required. Job Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Biological Science required. Similar degrees will be considered based on job history and/or applicable experience Experience: 5 years or more of working with food safety regulations within the food/retail industry or with a regulatory agency. Demonstrated ability to coach, teach, train, and manage people and projects. Experience in and the ability to design, develop & present food safety training programs and trend analysis reporting. Previous experience working with food safety issues within the retail, distribution or manufacturing environments. Functional/Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Expert knowledge and understanding of local, state and federal food safety regulations and standards (FDA, GMP’s, USDA, GAP’s, SQF, etc). Working knowledge and demonstrated competency in the process of Hazardous Analysis of Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Preventative Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) principles. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while remaining aligned with corporate food safety programs and goals. Must be able to communicate effectively and possess strong verbal, written, computer and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence positive behavioral change without direct authority. Ability to establish proactive, collaborative working relationships with organizational leadership as well as public health officials.
