Merit America is a non-profit that has been named by the New York Times as “a glimpse of the hybrid future of training programs for the disadvantaged.” We want to build the most effective large-scale education-to-employment program in the country, and we’re building a growth team to meet this ambitious goal.
As a Staff Engineer at Merit America, you will work on a dynamic product development team to build a technical platform to help our low wage workers learn in-demand technical skills and transform their careers and lives. Our goal is to build an end-to-end learner experience that feels trustworthy, accessible, and personal. In agile sprints with product management, design, and other functional departments, you will help us build and enable new solutions to address key needs and pain points, allowing us to increase Merit America’s impact and scale.
This is a 100% remote position. You’ll be on a small engineering team (less than 5). Overall, we’re a team of 80+, and we’re proud of our culture that combines the best of startups and nonprofits; you can move fast and ship, but you’ll have work-life balance while making an impact on thousands of un/underemployed Americans.
In this role, you will:
- Work on a small team, wearing the many hats of an application developer
- Projects can range from infrastructure to web application to automation and a variety of software projects.
- Build out our technical platform and end-to-end-learner experience, optimizing for growth, performance, and ease of future testing.
- Work alongside product management, marketing, coaching and admissions to make sure we have the data and infrastructure to quickly understand and optimize limited growth resources.
- Instrument our tools and interfaces to make sure we’re properly logging events and recording results, making sure we have the infrastructure in place to make meaningful inferences from our experiments.
- Help shape the engineering and product culture at Merit America.
What we’ll be looking for:
- You’re a developer first but also have a perspective on product strategy and design and have a history of building relationships across functions.
- You’re interested in building something from the ground up. You have a high degree of autonomy, and you’ve shipped things on your own or with a small team.
- You want to make an impact with your work. Everything we build is to help people transition from low-wage work to upwardly-mobile careers.
- You’re scrappy and resourceful, but know when to ask for help to meet goals.
- You’re passionate about software, and you can translate that passion for less technical audiences.
- You’re excited to be one of the first members of a new product function, and you’re comfortable with the speed of change that comes from working at an early-stage startup.
Technical skills:
- You care about code quality and understand best practices and tradeoffs around software development
- You have 3-5 years of experience working in teams shipping and iterating on medium to large projects
- You’re comfortable integrating external services to achieve product goals
- A proficient debugger, solving technical problems in a variety of software contexts
- You have picked up new languages/libraries and have become proficient with them
