Job Description
An opening for a postdoctoral researcher is available in the Building Energy Science Group of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). We are looking for a motivated, quick learning, and self-starting graduate to join the team to develop next-generation HVAC and energy storage technologies. The candidate will join team members on cutting-edge projects to research, develop, and evaluate systems incorporating novel thermal and electrochemical processes.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate should have a strong background and understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, electrochemical devices, techno-economics, numerical modeling, and experiments. The candidate will aid team members in the development of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and energy storage technologies incorporating novel system architectures and electrochemical processes. System modeling and experimental characterization will be used to develop outcomes that are efficient, cost effective, and promote energy equity. The researcher is expected to document work/results in reports, presentations and journal articles.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, design, and analyze novel HVAC and energy storage processes and components using numerical models.
Support equipment procurement and laboratory experimental characterization.
Support techno-economic assessment of novel technologies.
Assist in project management, including writing reports, paper publications, and presentations in program review or conferences.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong background in thermal sciences (i.e. thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer) theory, numerical modeling, and experiments including data acquisition.
Knowledge of programming for data analysis (i.e. Python, MATLAB)

Basic Qualifications Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Additional Required Qualifications
Candidate should have a strong aptitude to learn and explore the field needed for development, to be motivated and dedicated, and to deliver research results on time and on budget. Excellent interpersonal, communication, documentation skills, oral and writing proficiency in English. Demonstrated research capability and creativity to solve challenging problems, as well as the ability to work well in a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience in some or all of the following:
HVAC fundamentals (vapor compression and non-vapor compression).
Knowledge of electrochemical devices (i.e. batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors).
Electrochemical device fundamentals.
Building modeling, including integration with HVAC.
Laboratory experiments and data acquisition systems.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Job Profile: Postdoctoral Researcher / Annual Salary Range: $69,400 – $114,500
