New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) helps New Yorkers before, during, and after emergencies through preparedness, education, and response. NYCEM is responsible for coordinating citywide emergency planning and response for all types and scales of emergencies. We are staffed by more than 200 dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, including individuals assigned from other City agencies.
The NYCEM Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit produces reliable location-based information through the integration, analysis, and visualization of essential data distributed in the form of maps, datasets, summary metrics, and associated applications.
JOB DESCRIPTION
NYCEM has an exciting opportunity for a motivated GIS professional to join the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) unit at New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM). The selected applicant will be the Director, GIS Operations with a focus on overseeing daily division operations, GIS application development, training, and process automation. Additionally the selected applicant will serve as an agency and citywide resource for geospatial data and operations.
With supervision from NYCEM’s Executive Director of GIS, the candidate will provide strategic direction for the GIS Operations team and manage its day-to-day operations including the execution of the work plans of its staff. The selected candidate will work to improve field data collection processes, increase availability of geospatial data through the use of applications, maintain GIS division readiness, and increase the automation of division processes.
The candidate will work to improve data coordination and management during emergencies, including interagency data sharing. The candidate will support the data management needs of NYCEM and its partners and will work with application development and MIS staff to promote optimal delivery of geospatial data. The candidate will also research innovations in predictive analytics, field data collection, and situational awareness dashboards.
The selected candidate will be assigned to periodic Emergency Operations Center team and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies. The selected candidate will also participate in drills and exercises, assist with Ready NY presentations to external groups, and will undertake special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
NOTE: New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
