RTÉ is Ireland’s national public service media organisation. A leader in Irish media, RTÉ provides comprehensive, cost effective, free-to-air multi-media services to the public in Ireland and interested audiences internationally.
RTÉ Archives house Ireland’s largest audio-visual collection and are responsible for collecting, preserving and making accessible the creative and documentary output of the national broadcaster. The collections combine hundreds of thousands of hours of moving image and sound recordings, together with photographs, manuscripts and administrative documents. The RTÉ Archives are an important support to RTÉ’s multi-media services and a rich resource for the wider creative media industry both in Ireland and abroad. RTÉ Archives also work with cultural partners and heritage institutions as well as supporting academic research and the educational sector. Access to RTÉ Archives, commercial or otherwise, fulfils a regulatory function.
In order to address the risks of age, fragility and technological obsolescence of its legacy holdings, RTÉ has put in place a programme of work to further protect these collections and ensure they are accessible for the future. The combined projects will bring the reformatted holdings into a digital preservation process aligned with a new digital archiving infrastructure for all current and future RTÉ media content services as part of RTÉ’s strategic plan.
